How Your Body Can Digest Stress
Biodynamic massage literally aids the body in digesting stress, (Gerda Boyesen's theory of the psycho-peristalish of the intestine). Life experience has an impact to a greater or lesser extent on how well we feel in our bodies. A combination of psychological and physical stressors affect the feeling of well-being or presence of disease in our bodies. Biodynamic massage therapy can restore well-being and vitality and may reveal long held memories that have been held in muscles that have been depleting energy levels with the effort of holding back repressed emotions. On a physiological level, biodynamic massage therapy digests the waste products that have collected in problem areas of the musculature (including viscera). A stethoscope is used to listen to the peristaltic sounds in the intestines that not only indicate food being digested but give moment to moment feedback of the digestion of waste from any part of the whole body.
A Journey of Discovery
Massage techniques vary according to which level I intend to contact a person. A first massage will be a journey of discovery, gleaning information about which areas of the body need attention, how the client is receiving this attention is noted and clients cannot fail to gain increased bodily awareness in response to my touch and feedback. Massage therapy can support you in times of stress and alleviate symptoms of dis-ease. When on a relatively even keel, it might feel appropriate to disrupt a person's sense of equilibrium (with the utmost respect to a person's defences) by means of massage to muscles suspected of holding long repressed emotional material.
Although I am usually in a role of being a person's body centred psychotherapist and incorporate massage in the course of therapy when I have reason to believe that it will be helpful, it is not inevitable, compulsory. I am also willing to offer biodynamic massage without taking on the role of psychotherapist. For instance, I have long-term clients who come for a massage say once a month in order to check in with their bodies and maintain their health, making sure they don't miss any signs of stress building up in their bodies. I am also willing to work with people who are in verbal therapy and they and their therapist believe massage would be helpful to aid their therapeutic journey. In this case all processing of emergent material would be done with their therapist.
